Dream

I woke up in a panic a couple of morning ago, due to the following rather grim dream:

Yuki and I were diving off Zanzibar. We were swimming between reefs along the sandy bottom, possibly stunned by the weird beauty of garden eels snaking out of the sand, but I digress. I turned on one side to look back at Yuki, and my right arm sank into the sea bed. I drifted along for a few metres with my arm under the surface. When I lifted it out, there was a long, deep gash down the centre of my forearm. The skin was white along the edges of the cut, like a cut goes in the bath. I looked closer to see that there were a series of pink lips deep within the wound. Lips with small tendrils waving between them. I signalled to our dive master. She looked at the wound, and looked concerned. Some kind of barnacles had got into my arm. She motioned me to squeeze the wound. I pinched either side of one of the sets of lips, and out popped what looked like a mussel you might eat at the pub. It popped out with some force, like an edamame pea from its pod. I continued down my arm until all the invaders had been popped out. The wound was still open but didn’t hurt any more.

At this point I woke up with a “fizzy” arm. I think I had been lying on it…

Just sent a job application off to Panos for a job as Web Editor which looks perfect. Here’s hoping it gets through a potential deluge of applications since it was advertised in the Guardian. Thanks to Stella for spotting that one for me!

Pub Poster

On Saturday night Dave, Tracy and I headed down to Deptford the possibly the last My Eyes, My Eyes… film night. The pub it has been hosted in for some time, The Centurion, is destined to be gutted out and turned into luxury flats. Very sad, since the pub is a real old London boozer with that mixed atmosphere or filth and friendliness that you just don’t get in All Bar One and the like.

Film night was excellent, with some hillarious shorts from the likes of Blunt ProductionsThe Planets being particularly rib tickling – a quite terrifying video collage of bald men wandering around Deptford and Greenwich, called Dr Faustus, and bawdy compering by a man dressed as a skeletal pirate.

When at the bar, I noticed this rather cheerful poster. I tried to take a picture of it with my digital camera, but owning to some liberal beer spillage, it wasn’t working. The bar man saw me struggling, and kindly offered me a copy. How nice.

An excellent night. There are a number of film nights in London – Exploding Cinema and the Blunt Club to name two I know of. It is sad to lose one, especially one I hadn’t heard of previously.

Last week I reported from the Woolwich Free Ferry. This week I took the alternative crossing – the Woolwich Tunnel. Spooky…

The police were first in line at the ice-cream van when we reached Ealing Common. One of those horrible Notting Hill Carnival moments where the police almost look human. Always childish of course…

I am always a sucker for dogs who have plastic cones around their heads to stop them biting themselves. This one looked desparate to bite someone on the bottom!

Lovely empty road

The march had a police escort all the way, and in many places this meant the road was blocked. It is always amazing to have these usually busy wide roads emptied. You can run around on them back and forth. Very liberating. Normally they are the fleeting domain of the carbound. This is why I love Critical Mass so much. Can’t wait to get my bike. Roll on the last friday of the month!

Just struck me as an ironic photo. Shame there weren’t more banners when I took it. Not pro enough to have waited for them. Maybe I can photoshop some in later :-)
